After a 30 year absence, I returned to clay in 2016 inspired by a trip to Southern Utah. Initially I made layered and eroded rock formations. But then, motivated by the need for a cup, the work was transformed into functional ware. In the current process, slabs of colored clays are layered much like sedimentary rocks and then cut and rearranged not unlike geologic faulting.

I derive much inspiration for my work in clay from Mother Earth and her natural world of beauty, colors, shapes, patterns and raw materials.  I love exploring form and function, and all aspects of the versatile medium that is clay.  I feel that my pottery is characterized by functionality and the durable qualities of high-fire stoneware and glazes, combined with an aesthetic pursuit of grace and beauty through unique decorative patterns and designs using slips and wax-resist techniques in a variety of ways.  I truly enjoy making every day usable wares for table and home, which complement my interests in culinary and gardening.  Please go to my Etsy store online if you wish to acquire some of my work.  I will update my online store for Clayfolk 2020, and for Holiday purchases through the end of the year.

Catherine G. McElroy loves to laugh & create art almost everyday. She has been a nationally selling silversmith, a whimsical watercolorist, a fluid art landscape painter, an enamelist making jewelry and is presently designing and making ceramic tiles for her mosaic hex signs and tabletops.  For the past 15 years she and her partner Mo have been traveling the west coast participating in fine art festivals where you may have met them. They live on the edge of nowhere in Etna, CA. If you have been to Etna, you know that nowhere is just over the hill.

I am compelled to alter surfaces with textures, lines, shapes, and images. Anything that lets the clay participate in the creative process works for me. I often carve with one drag tool or draw with a calligraphy brush. Carving lets me focus on space while brush designs share gestures found in leaves and flowers. Most pieces originate from the wheel, slabs, or extruded shapes. Project ideas are usually explored through a series of three or more. Eventually, most any project becomes an exercise in problem solving, one mark or brush stroke leading to another until the piece becomes its own.

My work is often found in the home, garden, and kitchen. Hopefully, there is a connection to food, flowers or fun. I expect my work to serve a purpose beyond visual beauty, regardless of design. Creative projects continually change, this week irregular extruded forms and the next carving fermenting crocks.

Clay is my bridge between the visual and conceptual world. Through pottery I strive to connect us to the earth and our daily experiences. Use my pottery for daily existence and the connection is complete.

For the 2020 Clayfolk Show and Sale, Bonnie will be displaying her works, along with Cheryl Kempner, Lorene Senesac, and Marydee Bombick at Ashland Art Works on Oak Street:

As a teenager it was love at first sight when I watched clay change its form on a spinning potter’s wheel, and in one form or another it continues to be an important storyline of my life. The focus of my clay work naturally has been the wheel, but I also enjoy hand building, and most recently have taken an interest in sculpture. There always seems like something new to explore and experience in the clay world whether making functional or sculptural pieces, and I want my work to celebrate beauty and the joy of being alive.

Pottery on Edge

Robert J. Musolf is a potter specializing in handbuilt pottery and ceramics. His work embodies the Japanese philosophy of wabi- sabi, celebrating the beauty of imperfection and transience. Drawing on past experience such as teaching faux finish techniques at the Otis School of Art and design in Los Angeles, working on restoration projects at the Getty Museum, and other historical sites in Los Angeles, he brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to his craft. Inspired by the contemporary art scene and world travels, he employs a variety of techniques, from sculptural handbuilding to experimental glazing. The result is a collection of unusual compositions inviting viewers to appreciate the unique beauty found in the fleeting and the flawed
