OPPORTUNITIES TO BE INVOLVED AND EARN POINTS

Three new ways to earn points : (1) Website Design Committee : This committee will guide Don Clarke as he creates the Clayfolk website. Committee members need to be willing to offer design and content opinions. This will be an on-line committee. Graphic design experience is always helpful. (2) Committee for 2007 Grants Pass Art Show : This committee will submit a proposal for a show during 2007. If accepted, this committee would then create the process to select the Clayfolk pieces for this show. (3) A replacement Program Chair is needed just to plan the programs for the meetings in January and April.

The new committees will be formed at the next Board meeting. If you would like to be on a committee and earn points, please write a brief paragraph describing your interests and experiences. Shirley Usher Receives First for Sculpture

Shirley Usher took a first place ribbon at the American Association of University Women's 58th annual show at the Grants Pass Museum of Art. The exhibit will be open through September 26. Lee co-judged awards for the show and noted that competition was stiff for sculpture, but the functional category had few entries, no awards were given. Clayfolk members should be better represented in next yearís show. Leslie asked the AAUW to contact our newsletter editor with 2006 information. - Leslie Lee

Notes from the Show Chair

For show participants, we will have an orientation talk at our general meeting on September 11th, 2005 on booth design and layout due to the differences in our new location. Specifically the backs of the booths and the floor plan will be discussed.

CLAYFOLK workshop : Maria Simon - Terra Cotta Wall Sculpture.

November 19th and 20th, 2005 - Maria Simon will present her working methods and thoughts on ceramic wall sculptures. Her work is usually in terra cotta. It will be held from 9AM to 4PM at South Medford High.

Her works seem very much about landscape. They explore form, light and shadow, rhythm and movement, and energy in the natural world and in human experience. They are not meant to be visual renderings, but more to evoke a sense of place. The images are about details of moments: she says of her works, "It is clear to me that what I choose to notice in our outer landscape is a direct reflection of a deeper inner landscape. It matters not which is "inner" or "outer". They are the same. These images are meditations."


Pieces are built from either terra cotta, in the case of wall tiles, or low fire white earthenware. Most pieces begin with a slab, to which coils have been added. They are then hand carved on an easel with spot lighting, so that she is working with light and shadow. Most of her pieces are partially burnished, then allowed to dry slowly. After initial bisque firing, they are painted with successive thin layers of terra sigilatta, burnished, and fired to earthenware temperature. Wall tiles are set into recessed, shadow-box type hardwood frames. Finally, all pieces are rubbed with wax for a luster finish.

CLAYFOLK workshop : BRUSHES with Frank Gosar

These brushes were created at our workshop with Frank Gosar. Participants made three brushes or more during the workshop. Frank also demonstrated techniques and detailed his methods. Our next workshop will be in November; see this issue (above) for details.

Scholarship Recipient Thanks Clayfolk - Sullivan is New Member

The Scholarship Committee met in August and awarded the Ellice T. Johnston scholarship of $1500 to Nicole Gibbs of Portland. Nicole attends the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. The committee reviewed over 20 applications. Larry Sullivan joined the committee as a new member. Currently we have one other position available so if you are interested send a letter to the Clayfolk P.O. Box stating your interest and qualifications. Bill Morgan Retires from SOPS

Bill has retired from the pottery supply. After 27 years of standing behind the counter, greeting customers as they came through the door, Bill is taking a long deserved break. He is greatly missed, but we continue the tradition he started.

Currently we are putting together a memory book for Bill, so if you have photos, stories, or best wishes to contribute take a moment the next time you are in to put them in the book or email them to us bmorgan@southeroregonpottery.com

Southern Oregon Pottery Supply was a direct spin off from Clayfolk. In 1978, when the new owners of Interstate Stone wanted to sell off the pottery supply aspect of their business, Clayfolk was contacted. Clayfolk chose not to take on the business, but some members set up a corporation, sold stock, and the rest is history. Clayfolk is one of the stockholders of SOPS.

Glaze Study Group

SculptureCenter in Long Island City, NY welcomes submissions from artists. Before submitting, read the mission statement or look at some of recent exhibitions. Sculpture Center maintains files of current work by artists, drawing on when curating group exhibitions and making them available to other curators.

Lincoln City Arts Festival in the Fall

ClayFest 2005

Fellowships, Promotions, Shows, Sales, Rentals

Fellowships in the Visual Art

The Oregon Arts Commission will award Fellowships for the visual arts, including pottery this year. Last year the awards went to literary/performing artists included Linda Alper of Ashland. The fellowships recognize outstanding work, and consider both past achievement and future promise.

Artists may use the $3,000 grants to complete work or embark on a new work, undertake research, study or travel, or experiment with materials or media. Applications are reviewed based on the quality of the artist's work as well as their record of sustained professional activity and achievement.

Also, we now have a local commissioner; Jean Boyer Cowling of Medford is filling the term of a member who resigned. Jean Boyer Cowling is an a supporter of arts education. She taught art in Medford. Then, she was a sales manager, responsible for 27 countries. She was involved with the Rogue Valley Art Association, the Craterian and fundraising for art museums, the Library and SOUís Foundation.

Classes, Studio Space and SOPS News

Classes with Penelope Dews

On-going classes are taught by Penelope in Phoenix, OR. Classes are either Thursday mornings 10-12 or Thursday evenings 6-8. Instruction is given in hand building, throwing, sculpture, firing a kiln, and making glazes and clay molds. Cost: $80 for 4 classes, includes materials and firings. For information call 535-1128.

Hummingbird Workshop Season Concludes - But for Glaze Formulation Follow-up

Summer workshops are concluding with the exception of a short follow-up session with Sue Springer to fill in some gaps in the Glaze Basics workshop. If anyone is interested in attending a 9AM to 1 PM presentation on understanding the Unity formula contact Leslie@LeslieLee.com. Other workshops this summer included Landscape Painting, Hands and Faces in Sculpture, Hand building with textured Slabs, and Making Molds for Ceramics. The line up for next summer will be determined soon so watch for interesting workshops.

Sue Springer of Illahe Tileworks will focus on using the Unity Formula at Hummingbird, the studios of Leslie Lee and Dennis Meiners on Friday, September 9th from 9AM to 1PM. Cost is $20. Bring a lunch if you would like to hang out and talk after class. Location is 8150 Applegate Road - 20 minutes from Jacksonville. Call 541-899-7045 for info or to register.

Winter Classes : Leslie and Dennis offer a "Create your own Class" situation where 1 to 6 people can request instruction in specific areas. The cost is $40/hr for up to four students - $10/hr per additional student. More sessions on hand building, making heads and painting ceramic sculpture are planned. Instruction within your schedule and budget! ClayNotes eNews is an easy way to form a class.

Need workspace? Now and then? Hummingbird also has studio space available at $5/hr which includes bisque firing (within reason) and use of some glazes. Minimum charge per visit is $20 unless the time adjoins a class.

Applegate Wood Fire Kiln in Yoncalla

The Applegate kiln was begun in 2002 when several potters including Peppi Melick, Susan Applegate, and Bruce Finch discussed building a kiln like pioneers might has built. They wanted to use local clays and wood fire. A grant from AHHAe allowed the 100 cubic foot kiln to be built on a site behind the historical Yoncalla house. Begun one hot autumn day, work continued the following wet winter. Various mud daubers, including Dawn Finch, Karl Hirth, Kent Willocks, Susan Roden, Annie Hubbird, Kathleen Piper met and worked on the kiln plans that Bruce Finch designed. The firing chamber is cylindrical to 7 feet in height with an arched dome over the top. Openings were left for the door and several ports. Then they mixed up local clay, added fire clay, sand, sawdust, cement and other materials that came to hand and flung great gobs of the cob at the kiln. Reinforced with chicken wire and fence wire, they managed to build the stack to about 10 feet tall on the east side and now are considering adding on more later.

Months passed as they collected, split, and cut to length wood until in October of 2004 they finally fired the kiln. Potters brought work, glazed and unglazed, bisqued and raw. The firing took about 36 hours to get to approximately cone 1. Many pieces did not mature but some ash was deposited and some of the pots were subsequently refired in other kilns with good results. The kiln and the local clays are both good for low fire to about cone 1. The group still hopes to turn out pioneer type ware, commemorative bricks as souvenirs, as well as to accommodate experimentation with low fire wood, ash and salt, stains, and glaze firings. The local clay itself is a warm red earthenware and with addition of grog, fires to cone 1 with good results.

More firings are planned after the danger of fire season has passed.

Bruce Finch did clay testing. He found that the local clay is montmorillonite clay mineral material ((Na,Ca) 0.33(Al,Mg)2Si4O10(OH)2.nH2O) A specific aluminous member of the smectite group). It has high shrinkage rates, warping and is, in its native state, too slimy and sticky for working by a potter. When grog from the clay was produced, it made for improved workability. They used ten to thirty percent. Bruce completed shrinkage and absorption tests at cone 012 to cone 04 and found shrinkage rates as low as 7.5% to 10.8 with thirty percent grog. Absorption rates were as low as 6.1% with 10% grog at cone 04 and as high as 14 at cone 012 with 30% grog. Davis and Cline Galleries are presenting a show titled "It Ain't Necessarily So" with work by the Trompe L'Oeil ceramics artist, Richard Shaw and others. The show closes September 17th.
