FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank you in advance for supporting me as your new president. My husband Jerry and I have been Clayfolk members since 2002. Being a part of this organization has transformed both of us as potters. Although I worked as a high school pottery teacher,  I knew very little about the inner workings of promoting our ware and what it takes to become working potters. Clayfolk workshops, general meeting programs, the Annual Show and Sale with the demos and the creative participants, and spin off groups like the glaze group at Jenny Harkins in Gold Hill and the Second Thursday group at Gwen Child’s in Grants Pass provided invaluable information. Just as important was the interaction we shared with others who love the art of clay: potters who encouraged us and shared their extensive knowledge. Whether you are a newly emerging potter or an experience potter, whether ceramics is a pastime you love and/or a business, the Clayfolk community has much to offer all of us. As your new president, I encourage each and every one of you to be active participants in this co-operative family of potters.

The Empty Bowls chairmanship for Jackson County, which is a 6 point position, has recently become available. This is a wonderful opportunity to become involved in Clayfolk. We work in partnership with the Soroptimists of Ashland, raising money for Rogue Valley Food Banks. Clayfolk potters donate their work for a sales event which traditionally takes place each spring at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. For more information, please contact me.

Our new Vice President is Penelope Dews, who will help me stay on track for the next year. Welcome to our new Membership Chair : Don Clarke, Splash Chair : Teri Nelson, and Program Chair : Cheryl Weese. Exciting new ideas are already on the horizon.

This newsletter contains pertinent Show information. If you’ve applied for the Show, make sure you check out the Committee assignments. Current points are also listed in this important issue.

Looking forward to working with you during this next year.

Shirley Huft
Clayfolk President

JULY PROGRAM

Hannah Brehmer will be sharing a video and examples of horsehair pottery for the program at the July 24th General Meeting.  Hannah is a remarkable potter who has been exploring pit fire, raku and saggar firing, achieving exquisite effects on her wheel thrown and hand built ceramics. Functional teapots and dinnerware are among the high fire pottery she creates. Clayfolk is fortunate that Hannah, a former community college teacher, is willing to share her life-long love and extensive knowledge of ceramics. For a preview of Hannah’s work, and a glimpse of her amazing gallery and studio, check out her website at www.hannahbrehmerpottery.org. (The editor did not write this!)
