Passing of Marvin Rosenberg

Marvin was a long time member of Clayfolk. He and his wife, Lilli Ann worked as a team in clay and cement, creating large public installations across the United States . Much of their work has been featured in several books and other publications. Marvin passed away in early June of this year and he will be missed.

July Board Meeting Change

The board meeting has been changed from July 29th to July 8th at 6PM . The location is Penelope Dews’ house. If you need directions please call 541-535-1128 or email pdews@usa.net by July 6th.

Contribute to Mosaic projects

A former Clayfolk member and now art teacher through the Ashland Art Center is looking for broken pottery to use in mosaic projects for her classes. Any other interesting little items of glass, beads or even metal are welcome. She is willing to arrange picking up any donations in the Medford/Ashland area between now and July 26th. If you have contributions, contact Lisa at 1ca@jeffnet.org

Program for July 14th Meeting … A Light Booth ?

Phil Fishwick will demonstrate the use of a portable light booth used for getting professional looking photographs of your artwork. It has the gradient background and proper bulbs that will even allow an inexpensive digital camera to take quality photos. For a minimal fee, Clayfolk members will be able to check out and use this in their own homes. Phil will not only show how the booth is used, but give tips unique to photographing dimensional ceramics. This is an excellent opportunity for Clayfolk members who want to learn the basics of creating professional photographs of their work.

Easy-Ups for Rent

Clayfolk owns two easy-ups that are now available for rent during the Clayfolk Show. These easy-ups are kept at the storage facility and will be delivered by the Storage Committee to the show on the morning of our set-up day. If you are interested in renting one of the easy-ups, they are $25 each to rent, please call Debora Mahannah at 541-846-6741 to reserve one.

From Tips and Techniques

Paint Mobil Wax around joined edges such as handles, feet or other applications to slow the drying process and help elimimate the possibility of cracking.

Don't wax the bottoms of your pieces, just clean the glaze off by wetting a short napped carpet sample or a piece of foam and drag the bottom across several times. Voila!! clean bottoms. Hose off the residual glaze from the carpet/foam and use again.

NEW Photography Position - 5pts

We have created a new Clayfolk position open to our members. Firstly this position is to help facilitate our members to take photos of their own work by renting out the new photo-cube. Secondly the photographer will take photos during the Clayfolk Show and during two general meetings a year. Since this is a new position it is being created on a trial basis for one year. After the first year we will see what worked and what didn’t and modify accordingly.

Duties :

The Photo-Cube

The Cube will be introduced to the group at the July 14, general meeting. Members will be able to rent the cube very reasonably ($5) plus a deposit ($50) to insure the cube is well maintained. Another aspect of this position is to bring the cube to two general meetings per year for people to photograph work and to become educated in using the cube.

Clayfolk Show Photos

The photographer will be responsible for taking photos during the Clayfolk show (demos etc.) to help with future advertising and the web-page.

If you are interested in this position and/or have any questions about it please contact Penelope by emailing pdews@usa.net or phoning 541-535-1128.

NOTE : You need to own a digital camera, have some knowledge of photography, be able to do simple photo editing (Don Clarke our webpage expert will be able to help with this), and know how to email photos.

My heartfelt gratitude to the Clayfolk potters

from Jackson County Empty Bowls

The 11th Annual Empty Bowls project, which is a collaborative effort between Clayfolk, The Schneider Museum, The Art Department at SOU and Soroptimist International of Ashland generated $4,224 to donate to four food banks in the Rogue Valley. Clearly without the donations and the support from Clayfolk and other local potters this event would not happen. As the co-chair in 2010 I want to express my gratitude for all of the bowls, the artwork and the products the members of Clayfolk donated. Hannah Brehmer, the Clayfolk representative for 2010, played a major part in making the event successful. I hope Hannah, along with Clayfolk, benefited from the publicity. Dialogue has already begun with Stephanie Friedman, the 2011 Clayfolk Empty Bowls rep. Part of our discussion included ways of providing the potters who donate products more recognition.

The Empty Bowls committee welcomes your ideas and suggestions. Thanks for contributing your time and your talent-- it makes a difference for the hungry in our community.

Sue Kurth Soroptimists International of Ashland co-chair Empty Bowls sales 2011

Josephine County Empty Bowls

This year's EMPTY BOWLS event is on Tuesday, October 12th at Parkway Christian Center - 6PM to 8PM . The event benefits both Options and the local Food Bank. Also, please consider making other pottery items for donation to their auction? Donations will be accepted in September.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

OPA empty bowls are selling so well that AN EMERGENCY CALL FOR MORE BOWLS HAD TO BE SENT OUT. Here is a little radio show that highlights hunger and solutions as part of a piece on hunger in Oregon . Check out the link http://www.kink.fm/Combating-Hunger-in-Oregon/7606357

Some updates to the Clayfolk webpage

There is a new splash page with an update from Shirley and we've added the awesome list of Expert Tips/Tools/Techniques. Plus, I'd like to remind you that the webpage is your webpage and you can use it to announce and list your upcoming events/sales/shows/etc by simply clicking on the Events link and sending in your listing.

And is there someone out there that would like to volunteer to add some logic to the wonderful tips-tools-techniques section. In the current format it is quite random and would probably be more useful if it were organized into categories/etc. So ... if you're good with MSWord and have some free time let me know and I'll send you the original document.

Please find your name on the list, note your points, booth notation and/or the type of
booth you are waiting for.  Members who are tied for points are in order of application post-mark.
People do drop and there is a good chance if you are on the waiting list, or in a smaller booth that
you may end up with your first choice.  You will be informed as changes take place.
If there are any discrepancies, spelling, points, choice of booth etc.
please phone Debora 541-846-6741 and let her know.
