On the simmering evening of July fifteenth, we met at Susan and Steven Casaleggio’s Jacksonville home. Penelope Dews welcomed members, old and new. Cheryl Kempner enumerated points and membership corrections. Then she replied to questions.

In cheerfully unanimous vote, Kazuko Young was voted into an At Large Position vacated by Bonnie Morgan. The rest of the board members remain the same.

Penelope gave some clarification on Board Member positions, such as President and Secretary, which the membership votes on yearly. General Member positions, such as Newsletter Chair and Workshop Chair, are then appointed by Board. Show Chair positions, such as Building and Sales, are then appointed by Show Chair.

Recruitment for Show Chair Trainee and Chairs for Group Booth and Signs is now open. You may contact Penelope Dews if you have questions or would like to apply for these openings.

Some positions have term limits that were created so that all members have a chance to participate. General membership positions have 2 or 3 year terms. Some members have expressed a fear of being left in a position for longer than they wish when no one steps forward to replace them. Penelope said that volunteers are appreciated and positions can be filled for one year or for the whole term. Members just need to let the board know if there is a position of interest. Speaking with the person currently in the position about job expectations might be your first step.

Following are details concerning general membership positions :

  • Currently C.J. June is creating our Newsletter with Hannah Brehmer working as a trainee.

  • Hannah Brehmer stepped down as Empty Bowls chair and Stephanie Friedman is now our Empty Bowls Chair. Stephanie said she had met with the Ashland Soroptomists who spend the proceeds on hunger in Jackson County . New ideas might include an event and a throwing demo at the empty bowls event, perhaps at Ashland Art Works and creating a poster for the event. Chris Usher suggested that we post information on Empty Bowls at our show in November. Perhaps Soroptomists could make this sign.

  • Roxanne Hunnicutt collects Empty Bowls, sculptures and other clay objects for the Grants Pass Empty Bowls. Options for Southern Oregon and the Josephine County Food Bank run the Empty Bowls Event. This year on Tuesday, October 12th at Parkway Christian Center , 229 NE Beacon Drive local artists, high school pottery classes and clients have contributed bowls and local restaurants donate very fine soup. For more information email Ellen Johnson at ejohnson@optionsonline.org or call 541.476.2373. Also Roxanne will collect bowls anytime. (Click here for more and clarifying info on the two separate counties events?)

  • The new Chair for the splash page is Roxanne.

  • Clayfolk needs a member to volunteer as Photographer. This is a new position which will be worth five points this year. The job is taking pictures at demonstrations and the show, Show photos will include demos, booths, and candid shots of booth artists and attendees. The photographer will teach members how to properly take shots of their work, how to use the photo cube and will be responsible for renting the photo cube. The photo cube will rent for $5.00 with a $50.00 deposit. The cube will be available at to two meetings a year and at the show for participants. This will be a one year position. The board will decide at the end if the position is necessary.

Members are asked to voluntarily receive on-line newsletters which can be read or downloaded on our website. Don Clarke will email those who take the newsletter electronically when it is ready. With about $500 spent on postage a year, in this way you can help the organization shrink this bill.

Gwen Child handed out pocket-sized show flyers. These will be handed out to the public. The card sized flyers are in packets of 100. Get yours soon? Email : gchilds1@msn.com.

Inside the lovely and cool home, Phil Fishwick demonstrated the set up and use of the new photo cube and lighting system which Clayfolk has purchased. Ray Foster assisted and photographed some of his really beautiful pottery. Members left in the cool Oregon evening with chummy conversations ringing in their ears and details of the organization, the show and soon to be created clay works running though their mind.

REMINDER: check out the new Ask the Experts on our website under Resources for Tips and Tricks; and review the Gallery section to update or add to your own page.

We can put links from our team account to your Etsy Shops or Web pages so it is a good way to promote your wares. As we get closer to the show I will try to make daily announcements with dates and times.
